“The Heritage Scholarship encouraged me to make the most of every opportunity” – the story of Heritage alumna Andrea Ghimpu

12 June 2026

The Heritage Scholarships Programme 2026-2027 offers students from the Republic of Moldova the opportunity to study in an international educational environment and gain access to experiences that can help them discover their potential and build their future.

For Andrea Ghimpu, a recipient of three Heritage academic scholarships, this opportunity meant much more than recognition of her academic achievements. The scholarship motivated her to become actively involved in school life, participate in international projects, develop her leadership skills, and make the most of every opportunity that came her way.

Today, Andrea is continuing her studies at Bocconi University, one of the world’s leading higher education institutions in the fields of Economics and Finance. Below, she shares her experience as a Heritage scholar and reflects on the role the scholarship played in shaping her journey

“Looking back at my time in high school, I realise how much I grew both academically and personally. Receiving three academic scholarships is something I am especially proud of, as they reflect the dedication and effort I put into my studies and extracurricular activities over the years.

The first stage of the scholarship selection process was creating a personal portfolio in any format we chose, showcasing everything from academic achievements to extracurricular activities. Every accomplishment had to be supported with evidence, and although gathering all the documents initially felt overwhelming, it eventually became a meaningful trip down memory lane.

The second stage was the interview, which was designed to test our ability to express ideas clearly and think quickly under pressure. The interview started with a 8-10 minute personal presentation, where we were given complete creative freedom over the concept, format, and execution. I created 10-minute videos for each year that I took part in the program, and rewatching them now makes me emotional about how far I have come, while also bringing back a sense of nostalgia for the school days. Through this process, I got my first exposure to video editing but more importantly, to interviewing itself: a skill that became invaluable over the years.

Receiving these scholarships positively influenced my overall experience at school. They motivated me to continue working hard academically while also encouraging me to stay involved in the school's life and in projects beyond the curriculum. At Heritage International School we were given plentiful opportunities to grow and develop our skills in order to become well-rounded individuals. I participated in competitions, was a member of the student council, took part in global projects that ranged in scope from climate change awareness to educational improvement, and so much more. The scholarships became a stepping stone that encouraged me to put myself out there more confidently. At the same time, balancing all these responsibilities taught me the importance of discipline and consistency. I developed strong time-management skills and an ability to stay organized even in stressful situations. These habits helped me succeed in school, but they also remain valuable to this day.

The scholarships were not only encouraging academically, but also helpful financially, as they supported my education and motivated me to make the most out of the different opportunities offered by the school. Since HIS is the only international school in the Republic of Moldova, I am immensely grateful to have had the chance and support to complete the International ALevels program, which remains a unique opportunity in Moldova.

All of these factors combined made me who I am today, and thanks to all the guidance I received, I managed to achieve my goals. I am proud to say that I am currently finishing the second year of my Bachelor’s degree at Bocconi University, one of the top universities globally in the areas of Economics and Finance. In the end, those experiences not only defined my school years in the best way possible, but also laid the foundation for my future.”

Andrea’s story demonstrates that the Heritage Scholarship is much more than a reward for academic achievement. It is an opportunity that encourages students to embrace challenges, become actively involved in their communities, and make the most of the experiences that prepare them for successful university studies and future careers.

If you see yourself in Andrea’s story, or if you know a student who is curious, determined, and eager to seize every opportunity, the Heritage Scholarships Programme could be the next step.

This year, Heritage is offering 8 scholarships covering up to 100% of tuition fees. Both Heritage students and students from other schools across the Republic of Moldova are eligible to apply. The application deadline is 14 June 2026.
