How an American chemist became a Science teacher at the only Cambridge School in Moldova

19 April 2024

Emily Morgan crossed the ocean, carrying from the United States not only her luggage, but also a huge passion for science, until she reached Moldova. Her career had begun in an American laboratory, where she juggled test tubes and chemical formulas, but her heart was stolen by the desire of making a difference in children’s lives. So, she swapped her lab coat for her Moldovan adventure, where she volunteered at an orphanage for a year. But what seemed like a temporary escape turned into a new and extraordinary chapter of her life. Emily now spends her days inspiring young enthusiasts with her love for real sciences and enjoying the warmth of the colourful community in her new “home” – Heritage International School.

“I like everything in Moldova – the people, the culture, I feel safe here”

Ever since she arrived in Moldova, Emily has been impressed by the authentic beauty of our country and felt a connection with the people here: “I love everything – the people, the culture. For me, life is simpler here, but in the good sense of the word, there is not so much constant work pressure. And its a safe country – I feel safe.”

Her degree in Science (Chemistry) from Auburn University in Montgomery, Alabama, opened doors to new opportunities, including being a teacher for Heritage students. Emily Morgan now teaches multiple Science subjects to 7th, 8th, and 9th graders such as Chemistry, Biology, Earth Science, and Physics. Recently, she started teaching students in the “Cambridge International AS & A Level” program, which the young teacher says is an excellent preparation for university.

“Coming from the United States, I can say that what is taught in the Cambridge Program at Heritage is very advanced. Some of the things the students learn here I only studied when I went to university. I think it is an excellent program, of a higher level, and if the students understand what they are learning now, at the university it will be very easy for them. English, as a universal language, opens doors globally. With the skills students develop here, I believe they are well prepared to follow their aspirations wherever they may take them.”

Drawing on her solid academic background, Emily has an innovative and effective teaching approach. The teacher focuses on simplifying scientific concepts to make them accessible to all students, regardless of their level of knowledge.

“I adopted a method learned in college when I had to do research presentations – if you don’t understand the material well enough to explain it even to a child, then you don’t know the subject well enough. And now, when I prepare for the lessons, I apply this approach.”

Heritage – a multicultural environment and a global educational platform

Heritage International School makes Emily feel like home: “For me, this is a wonderful place. It amazed me that there are so many nationalities and people from all over the world in this school. Many people don’t even know that Moldova exists, and yet we all came here, to this school, we speak English, some students even know five other languages! And here we are, in this small country, in this school, where we meet, communicate, and listen to each other’s life stories. I find it fascinating.”
